The concept of the "forest blanket" in Finnish folklore refers to a mythical creature or supernatural phenomenon that is said to wrap the forest in a protective and mysterious cloak during the long winter months. It is believed to be a veil of magic or energy that keeps the forest creatures and spirits safe and hidden from harm. According to Finnish folklore, the forest blanket is associated with the mystical creatures known as metsänpeitto or "covered by the forest." These beings have the ability to cover themselves, or other objects, with an invisible cloak made of forest foliage, making them blend seamlessly into their surroundings. By doing so, they can avoid being seen or caught by unsuspecting humans who may find themselves lost or wandering into their territory.

The forest blanket is said to be strongest during the winter months when the forest is covered in snow and darkness prevails. It is believed that during this time, the metsänpeitto can extend their magical powers and create an almost impenetrable shield around themselves and the forest, making it difficult for humans to venture into their domain. Encountering a forest blanket is traditionally seen as a sign of bad luck or a warning sign. Legends tell tales of people becoming disoriented or lost when they unwittingly step into the realm protected by the forest blanket. It is said that those who do find themselves enveloped by the forest blanket may experience a sense of confusion and bewilderment, causing time to lose meaning and making it nearly impossible to find their way back.
